Guide to the Best Hiking Trails in Los Angeles

by ilan srulovicz 20 Oct 2016

It’s not a secret that the city of Los Angeles has become well-known around the globe for its numerous attractions and activities.  Those attractions also include some wonderful hiking trails. There are more than 180 hiking trails in this city of distinct climate zones and fascinating geology, but there are a few of them that stand out from the rest.  Here are some of the best hiking trails in Los Angeles.

Solstice Canyon
Solstice Canyon was opened as a public park in 1988. There is a lot of history in this area. The stonewalls of Matthew Keller’s 1865 stone cottage can be seen. This structure stood until 2007 when it was destroyed by the 2007 Corral Fire. You can see a beautiful year-round waterfall on this hike as well. The area was once used for satellite testing in the 1960’s and early 70’s.

Malibu Creek State Park
Th Malibu Creek State Park was once owned by 20th Century Park. You may recognize the scenery from movies and television shows that you’ve seen. This was the outdoor set of the television series M*A*S*H. This hiking trail has great geology, rock climbing, lakes and rivers. This trail is a great trail to see whether you’re climbing the ridge of Castro Crest or just taking a flat stroll along the Canyon floor.

Temescal Canyon
If you hike Temescal Canyon on a clear day, you can see all of Santa Monica Bay. This hiking option offers stunning costal views, cool rock formations, and a seasonal waterfall, which is why many families opt to come to it throughout the year.

Sandstone Peak
If you want to go to the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains, this is your trail! This hike will also give you a wonderful view of Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Mount Baldy (also known as Mount San Antonio)
At 10,064 feet, Mount Baldy is the highest point in Los Angeles County, the third highest peak in Southern California, and the highest peak in the San Gabriel range. It has spine-tingling ridgeline trails and awe-inspiring views.

Whenever you’re about to embark on a day out in Los Angeles, consider visiting one of these one-of-a-kind trails, and make sure your smart phone or go pro has plenty of space to take pictures and video!
